Anaesthesia, Perioperative Medicine & Pain Management

Our speciality has a broad reach, including the care of patients of all ages undergoing anaesthesia for surgery, providing pain-relief for women during childbirth, and caring for patients who have problems with chronic pain.

Our research portfolio is also broad with studies aiming to find answers to questions which are important to patients and anaesthetists:

  • What can we do to decrease major complications after surgery?
  • Are new technologies to treat chronic pain effective?
  • Can we improve the quality of care of patients undergoing emergency surgery in our region?
  • Together we are working to try and answer these questions and more.

We have established a network of anaesthetists throughout North East and North Cumbria who are active in clinical research. Some are leading innovative research projects supported by national funding grants; others are coordinating local participation in multi-centre clinical trials.

The Specialty Clinical Lead for the Network is Dr Stephen Wright, Consultant in Anaesthesia and Intensive Care at Newcastle Upon Tyne NHS Foundation Trust. Scroll down the page for more details of the Anaesthesia, perioperative medicine & pain management Specialty Team.

Maureen’s story

When Maureen Bates was offered the chance to take part in a clinical trial before undergoing a major operation she didn’t think twice and she is now urging others to do the same.

Maureen of Skelton was the first patient to complete a pre-op fitness programme as part of a study exploring the potential benefits of high intensity exercise prior to surgery.

“I thought if it helps me it will help other people as well so I was happy to take part,” she said.
