Cardiovascular Disease

Clinical trials in cardiovascular disease take place across our region to help improve treatment and services for people in the North East and North Cumbria

In Cardiovascular disease research we look at diseases of the heart (cardio) and/or blood vessels (vascular).

There a number of causes for cardiovascular diseases but the two most common are atherosclerosis (where our arteries become clogged up by fatty substances) and hypertension (high blood pressure).

We run a many different studies that deal with all aspects of cardiovascular disease such as heart failure, blood pressure, heart defects from birth, heart muscle disease and surgery.

We are researching causes, how best to diagnose it and how best to treat it.

There is a team of hospital Consultants working with the Clinical Research Network: North East North Cumbria to support cardiovascular research.

Many hospitals in our region are taking part in cardiovascular research. If you would like to find out more about current and future cardiovascular disease studies please visit the UK Clinical Research Network Portfolio database at:

UK Clinical Trials Gateway

If you would like any more information about this research then please contact Chris Speed ( and he will be able to put you in touch with your local research teams.
