Diabetes research aims to make advances in diabetes care by improving the coordination and quality of research into type 1 and type 2 diabetes.

We support the set up and delivery of clinical research in the NHS in type 1 and type 2 diabetes as well as other forms of the condition including gestational diabetes. By focussing on methods of treatment, diagnosis, care and prevention, we support a wide range of research.

Our research priorities include:

  •  Ethnic minorities
  •  Obesity research and prevention
  •  Service organisation and delivery
  •  Patient self-management
  •  Hypoglycaemia
  •  Glucose monitoring
  •  Pregnancy
  •  Complications

Clinical trials in the North East and North Cumbria

There is a team of hospital Consultants working with the Clinical Research Network: North East North Cumbria to support diabetes research. Research happens in many hospitals and GP Practices and the team is headed by:

Dr Peter Carey – Consultant in Endocrinology and Diabetes at Sunderland City Hospitals Trust

Chris Speed (Research Delivery Manager).
