Get Involved

Health Service Research

People in the North East and North Cumbria are getting involved in Health Service Research, which aims to improve the quality of NHS health services and how these are delivered to patients in our region.

This Specialty oversees research that deals with the development and delivery of health services in the NHS. Health Service Research is a clinical specialty in its own right, but also works collaboratively with the other 29 clinical specialties within the North East and North Cumbria Clinical Research Network.  As such, there are many opportunities for the public and patients to participate in a wide range of high quality clinical research that focus on improving the quality, accessibility and organisation of health services.

We work to promote the successful delivery of research studies in the NHS and to help plan new studies that will address patient’s needs. Research includes studies concerned with patient experiences of healthcare, patient safety, quality improvement, health service workforce issues and organisation of care (including primary-secondary interface).

We support and promote research by:

  •  Supporting researchers to deliver high quality studies to time and target in the NHS
  •  Engaging with the existing research community
  •  Developing research infrastructure locally

The Health Service Research specialty will take the lead for the evaluation of complex interventions which are expected to produce highly generalisable results across conditions or settings.

The Health Service Research Specialty Group is led by Dr Yitka Graham, Senior Lecturer in Public Health at the University of Sunderland and Researcher in General Surgery at City Hospitals Sunderland NHS Foundation Trust. Membership of this Specialty Group is being built to involve academics and practitioners from all of the region’s NHS Foundation Trusts, Clinical Commissioning Groups and Universities with a specific interest Health Services & Delivery Research at both national and local levels. Primary Care and lay member representation on the Specialty Group is also very much welcomed.
