Why is this study important?

Pre-eclampsia is a serious condition during pregnancy.  Some women get high blood pressure (BP) and protein in their urine (proteinuria) and this can be very serious for them and their babies.  Tests are performed regularly to monitor BP and proteinuria throughout pregnancy.  This study is important as researchers want to find out the best way to measure the amount of protein in the urine and to look after women with this condition.

What is the aim of this study?

This study aims to find the best method for measuring the amount of protein in the urine to predict diagnosis of pre-eclampsia and how serious the condition is for women.

What do people in this study have to do?

This study involves collecting three urine samples.  The first sample will be collected on the day women are recruited (join the study), the second sample would be a small sample taken from a 24 hour urine collection. The last urine sample will be collected when the women come into hospital to deliver their babies.  Information is also gathered from the medical notes about the women’s medical history, pregnancy and delivery.

What are the risks and benefits for women taking part in this research study?

The researchers do not expect that there are any risks for women taking part in this study as the tests that are being done are part of routine practice.  There will be no direct benefit to women who take part but the researchers believe that information gained from this research study will help to improve the management of women with pre-eclampsia in the future.


24 Hour urine collection – all urine passed over a specific 24 hour period is collected in a sterile container, test results are based on the total amount of tested substance excreted by the body over a 24 hour period. The sample container should be kept cool, closed and protected from light between each time you pass urine.
